Mat training is one of the most valuable skills you can teach your dog. It gives them a clear, consistent place to relax — whether you’re at home, visiting friends, or out at a café.

It also helps reduce problem behaviours by giving your dog an alternative to pacing, jumping, or seeking attention.

Start with the basics:

  • Place the mat on the floor

  • Reward your dog for looking at or stepping on it

  • Gradually build up to lying down

  • Reinforce calm behaviour, not just position

Keep sessions short and positive. Avoid forcing your dog onto the mat — the goal is for them to choose it.

As your dog improves, you can:

  • Increase duration on the mat

  • Add distractions

  • Practise in different environments

Mat training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about teaching your dog how to relax in a structured, predictable way.

Consistency and clear reinforcement will make all the difference.
