Mat Training Made Easy
By Alison
Mat training is one of the most valuable skills you can teach your dog. It gives them a clear, consistent place to relax — whether you’re at home, visiting friends, or out at a café.
It also helps reduce problem behaviours by giving your dog an alternative to pacing, jumping, or seeking attention.
Start with the basics:
Place the mat on the floor
Reward your dog for looking at or stepping on it
Gradually build up to lying down
Reinforce calm behaviour, not just position
Keep sessions short and positive. Avoid forcing your dog onto the mat — the goal is for them to choose it.
As your dog improves, you can:
Increase duration on the mat
Add distractions
Practise in different environments
Mat training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about teaching your dog how to relax in a structured, predictable way.
Consistency and clear reinforcement will make all the difference.
