Puppy Foundations: Getting It Right From Day One

Bringing a puppy home is exciting, but it can also feel like there’s a long list of things to teach. The truth is, you don’t need to do everything at once.

The early weeks are about building confidence, trust, and a strong relationship — not perfection.

Start by focusing on:

  • Rewarding calm behaviour (not just excitement)

  • Teaching your puppy that you are safe and predictable

  • Introducing new experiences gradually

  • Keeping training sessions short, positive, and pressure-free

Socialisation is important, but it’s not about overwhelming your puppy with everything at once. It’s about creating positive, controlled experiences

Examples of great early wins:

  • Your puppy chooses to come to you

  • Settling beside you without being asked

  • Checking in with you in new environments

Avoid the pressure to rush. Puppies need sleep, downtime, and time to process the world.

The habits you build now—especially around calmness and engagement — will shape your dog’s future behaviour far more than early obedience drills.
