Signs Your Dog Is Overstimulated
By Alison
Overstimulation is one of the most common reasons dogs struggle with behaviour, particularly in busy environments, group classes, or after exciting walks. It happens when your dog has taken in more information than they can comfortably process.
When this happens, their ability to think clearly drops—and behaviour often follows.
Common signs of overstimulation include:
Sudden bursts of energy (zoomies)
Barking, lunging, or mouthing
Ignoring cues they usually respond to
Sniffing excessively to disengage
Yawning, lip licking, or shaking off
Struggling to settle, even when tired
These behaviours are often misunderstood as “naughty” or “not listening,” but they’re usually a sign your dog is overwhelmed.
Triggers can include:
Busy environments
Too much social interaction
Long or highly stimulating walks
Training sessions that go on too long
What can you do?
Lower the intensity of the environment
Give your dog breaks before they reach their limit
Focus on calm activities like sniffing or mat work
Keep training sessions short and achievable
Recognising these signs early allows you to step in before your dog tips over into overwhelm. ✅
